Neo Calligraphy x Live Music

Mar Creation Inc. and CRS invite you to a one-time performance on Friday, June 17, 2016 at 7:30 pm at CRS, featuring live music by members of the multiple Grammy winning Maria Schneider Orchestra and live painting by internationally renowned Japanese calligrapher, Setsuhi Shiraishi. Shiraishi, currently on a US tour, will create a mixture of conventional and modern calligraphy accompanied by Jay Anderson (bass), Scott Robinson (sax), Gary Versace (accordion).

Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door and are available online, by phone 212-677-8621 and at CRS.

Calligrapher Setsuhi Shiraishi specializes in shodo, a form of Japanese calligraphy and is famous for creating large-scale works in a performance setting. Having been interested in calligraphy during her childhood, Shiraishi became a calligraphy master at 22 years old. She is pursuing her own unique style of calligraphy while expressing the world of traditional calligraphy. She has toured widely in Europe and Asia and recently in the United States, attracting many fans from around the world through her live collaborative performances with music.

先週、京都の妙蓮寺で開催された映像と音のパフォーマンス「TROPICAL TREE」、当日は30名近くの方にご来場いただき、盛況のうちに終演しました。

映像作家、書家、ギタリスト、箏、鳳笙と唄、サウンドスケープなど、多彩なアーティストによる豪華な共演と、妙蓮寺という場が持つ独特の時空が絶妙に響き合い、忘れることの出来ない一夜となりました。

Attracting almost 30 visitors, the film and sound performance ‘TROPICAL TREE’, that was held at the Myōrenji temple last week, became a great success.
‘TROPICAL TREE’ was a rich performance carried out by artists who are concerned with a wide variety of media such as film, soundscapes, guitar, koto (a traditional Japanese stringed instrument), shō (a Japanese reed musical instrument), poetry and calligraphy. It became an unforgettable night, hearing these instruments resound beautifully throughout the Myōrenji temple, a place where a unique sense of time and space can be felt.
